Interesting Facts About Cheese


piece of cheeseNo matter what kind of cheese is on the plate, no matter how it looks, or how it smells I will always grab a piece and eat it. That’s because I love cheese and love it a lot. Being such a cheese lover I thought it’d be fun to gather interesting facts or info about cheese. Here are some of them.

#1 – No one actually knows when the first cheese was made

We can usually find out when something was made or invented. Turns out that for cheese there is no exact date or time frame. It is believed though that cheese making dates back to over 4,000 years ago.

#2 – The most popular cheese recipe in the US is mac & cheese

With so many cheese recipes out there in the world it can be a bit surprising that mac & cheese is the most popular cheese recipe. It’s certainly not up there with upscale top restaurant-worthy dishes. But since mac & cheese is wholesome, tastes great, and is quick and easy to make I am not surprised that it is the most popular cheese recipe in most homes across the country.

#3 – One of Queen Victoria’s wedding gifts was cheese

Yes, that is not a joke. Queen Victoria actually got cheese for her wedding gift. It a huge wheel of cheddar cheese. While the standard cheddar cheese wheel is somewhere around 60 to 75 pounds in weight hers actually weighed over 1,000 pounds.

#4 – Cheddar Cheese originated from the village of Cheddar

There is a village in England called Cheddar and that is where cheddar cheese originated from. Perhaps other cheeses also get their names from the places where they originate from. Swiss cheese was initially made in Switzerland.

#5 – There is a cheese called Drunken Goat

Drunken Goat seems like a silly name to give to cheese but the taste is anything but silly. This semi-soft cheese actually has a smooth and sweet flavor. It is made from goat milk and is submerged in red wine for a few days hence the name Drunken Goat.
