Drew Barrymore is one of my all time favorite actresses. I think that I have seen her in every single movie she’s been in from E.T. to Home Fries to 50 First Dates. Whether the movie is good or bad, I like her. She’s got that touch of crazy that make her more appealing and she’s down to earth at the same time. She’s really come into the famous name she carries (carrying the DNA of the famous John Barrymore) as she takes on roles she loves and even direct and having her own production company.
But there’s a lot of things that you might not know about her. For instance, did you know…
She has a half-sister named Jessica
Jessica and Drew had the same father – John Drew Barrymore – and Jessica’s mother was Nina Wayne. Jessica died in a car crash, at 47 years of age, in July of 2014. The two women had met only briefly and last saw each other at their father’s funeral. Although drugs were found on the scene of the car crash, the event was ruled as “accidental”. Interestingly enough, the girls did share the same middle name – Blythe.
She holds the record for the youngest person to ever host Saturday Night Live
In November of 1982 Drew Barrymore set a Saturday Night Live record. She became the youngest person to ever host the show. She was only 7 years old but the girl was filled with personality and did a great job!
Her mom sold her baby clothes on eBay
Drew, and her mom, Jaid, had a lot of ups and downs. Jaid had her own issues with alcohol and addictions. Drew was a hard headed little girl that was maybe a little spoiled and definitely a bit unsupervised. But one of the things that Jaid might have regretted was selling Drew’s baby clothes on eBay! Who knows why she did it. Maybe she was upset about Drew’s success. Or maybe she just needed money. But the fact is that she did it. A little strange don’t you think?
She was emancipated at 15 years old
When she was only 15 she filed to have herself emancipated from her parents and it was granted. She then moved into her own apartment. It would seem like she’d really go wild after that but that is around the time that she really started to get her life together.
Drew Barrymore Corey Feldman
She started with alcohol and drugs very early.
She’s admitted that the first time she got drunk she was only 9 years old. By the time she was in her early teens she was doing hard drugs and completely out of control. With little parental guidance, things were really out of hand for a bit.
She lived with David Crosby and his wife
David Crosby, 1974
At 14, Drew Barrymore had already been in rehab twice and even tried to commit suicide. There was no doubt that she was a troubled girl. What finally turned her around? She went to live with David Crosby and his wife for three months. Both of them had been committed to sobriety for quite some time and they believed that they could give her a chance at a future.
She flashed David Letterman on TV
It was 1995 and it was David Letterman’s birthday. Drew, being the cheeky girl she was got up on his desk to do a little dance for him. Well, he got a little more than he bargained for when she flashed him (with her back to the camera)! Letterman is pretty calm and cool on his show but this even threw him off for a few minutes!
Her dog saved her life
Back when she was still married to Tom Green, they were sleeping peacefully when a fire broke out in their home. Their dog Flossie barked and banged against the door until her and Tom woke up and were able to get out unharmed.
She turned down a role in Striptease
The role of Nomi Malone was played by Elizabeth Berkeley in the movie Striptease. But did you know that Drew Barrymore was actually offered the role and turned it down? Now can you imagine Drew in the is role?
Jimmy Fallon met his wife Nancy through Drew.
When Jimmy and Drew were making the movie Fever Pitch, Drew introduced him to Nancy Juvonen, her friend and her business partner in Flower Productions. Nancy and Jimmy are now happily married and have two young children.
