Cake Icing

Cake is one of the most loved desserts.  It is usually chosen above all others, even pie, people love their cake!  One of the best things about cake, is the icing.  Gooey, sweet, delicious, who can resist cake icing?  This is why I wanted to share my 5 top cake icing recipes.  These recipes have been tried and loved for years, so you can feel confident in using them.  They are fabulous, guaranteed!



  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 3 and1/3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup whole milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. Place softened butter in an electric mixing bowl and turn on lowest setting
  2. Add salt and cocoa and allow to mix
  3. Gradually add sugar and then slowly add milk until you reach the proper consistency.
  4. If the icing is too stiff, add a bit more milk.

Butter Cream


  • 1 egg white
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup of shortening
  • 1 stick of real butter
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla
  • 1/2 cup of lukewarm milk (whole or 2%)


  1. With an electric mixer on medium, beat the egg whites until foamy
  2. Slowly add sugar and salt
  3. Slowly add butter, vanilla and shortening
  4. Add milk slowly
  5. Beat until completely smooth and all the sugar is melted and icing is no longer grainy



  • 2 and 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup cream
  • 2 tablespoons real butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. Place sugar, cream, butter and salt in a saucepan and stir to combine
  2. Over medium heat, stir until sugar dissolves
  3. Then heat while stirring until mixture forms a ball when a bit of it is dropped in cold water
  4. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature, do not stir
  5. Beat the cooled mixture until it starts to thicken.
  6. Add vanilla and keep beating until it is icing consistency
  7. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of cream to thin

Cream Cheese


  • 3 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and milk together until smooth
  2. Add vanilla and then add powdered sugar slowly and beat until fluffy

Peanut Butter


  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3 and 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg


  1. With an electric mixer, beat the milk and peanut butter together
  2. Add powdered sugar slowly until well blended
  3. If the mixture is too thick, add a bit of milk
